The Burns Night Meal

Back to When is Burns Night

There are a number of traditional Scottish Dishes served at a Burns Supper.

Starter

The meal starts with a soup. This could be Scotch broth, Cock-a-leekie soup or cullen skink.

Main Course

The main course features haggis which is produced with much ceremony. This is usually accompanied by mashed neeps (turnips) and mashed tatties (potatoes).

Dessert

This is followed by dessert such as Clootie Dumpling (a pudding prepared in a linen cloth/cloot), Cranachan or Typsy Laird (a Scottish sherry trifle).

Cheese Course

Dinner ends with cheese and bannocks (oat cakes).

The whole meal is accompanied with regular tots of uisge beatha (Scotch whiskey).
