The Full Moon

Back to the next Full Moon

The Moon is full when it's on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun, and when the three are aligned in almost a straight line. When we look at the full moon, the sun is behind us, fully illuminating the hemisphere of the Moon facing the Earth (the near side).

If the earth moon and sun are exactly in line, then the moon will sit in the earth's shadow and we get what is called a lunar eclipse.A solar eclipse happens when the moon sits in a straight line between the Earth and the Sun. although the sun is many times larger than the moon, the moon is much closer to us and so the moon hides the sun from view. This is a rare but spectacular sight.
