What is Ganesh Chaturthi

The Hindu Festival Ganesh Chaturthi celebrates the birthday of Lord Ganesh (Ganesha), the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Ganesh, the elephant-headed god, is widely worshipped as the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune. Ganesh is particularly prayed to for fulfilment of dreams and desires and before undertaking a new venture or business.

Ganesh Chaturthi is also known as Vinayaka Chaturthi, Vinayaka Chavithi, Chavath and Chathaa.

The festival is celebrated in the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada and lasts for 10 days, ending on Ananta Chaturdashi.
