What is Guy Fawkes Night?
“Remember, remember the Fifth of November, The Gunpowder Treason and Plot” Guy Fawkes Night (also known as Bonfire Night or Fireworks Night) celebrates the foiling the Gunpowder Plot on November 5, 1605. The plot involved a group of Roman Catholic conspirators attempting to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London.
Guy Fawkes (Bonfire Night) Celebrations
The UK celebrates Guy Fawkes night with fireworks displays and bonfires on which “guys” are burnt. The “guys” represent Guy Fawkes, the most famous of the conspirators.
Traditionally, children would raise money for fireworks by requesting a “penny for the guy”.
Certain foods are associated with Guy Fawkes Night, including toffee sweets and toffee apples, baked potatoes and black peas with vinegar.
