In the UK and Ireland, Mothers’ Day (or Mothering Sunday) is celebrated on the fourth Sunday during the period of Lent.

In the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, Mothers’ Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May.

The Origins of Mothers’ Day

It’s believed that Mothers’ Day owes its roots to Ancient Greece and the festival to Cybele, a deification of Mother Earth and the Great Mother of Greek gods. This festival coincided with the Vernal (Spring) Equinox from 15 March to 18 March, which gives the timeframe for Mothers Day today.

In the UK and Ireland Mothers’ Day falls on the fourth Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Easter Sunday. Its origins are believed to have come from the 16th Century Christian ritual of making an annual visit to the church of your mother, thereby reuniting mothers with their children on this day.

Young men and women would be released from their work for this day allowing them visit their families. Resulting in the traditions of celebrating and giving thanks to mothers nowadays.
