What is Simchat Torah?
The Jewish holiday Simchat Torah (Rejoicing in the Torah) marks the conclusion of the annual cycle of Torah readings and the start of a new cycle.
On Simchat Torah morning, synagogue readings start with the final part of the Torah, the last parashah of Deuteronomy. They then immediately move on to the first parashah of Genesis, thus beginning a new cycle of the Torah.
Completing the readings is a time of great celebration. Part of this service includes the opening of the ark and the procession of the Torah scrolls around the synagogue seven times. The procession is accompanied by singing, dancing, banners and candles.
