When is St Georges' Day
St George's Day falls on 23 April each year.
Who is St George?
St George is the patron saint of England. St. George has been the patron saint of England since the 14th century. St George's Day therefore marks England's national day.
In legend, George slayed a Dragon, although whether this was in the deserts of Libya on on Dragon Hill near Uffington in Berkshire is open to debate.
During the 1970s the flag of St George was adopted by extreemist far right groups and so was shunned by most people. However a concerted effeort to reclaim the flag as a symbol without the regressive fascist racist and homophobic connotations was carried out in the late 1990s and now people in England see no problem in flying the national flag. During international football competitions such as the world cup, England is plastered all over with the Cross of St George.
